Do you guys remember when I started using all-natural skincare and makeup? I began this journey back in Victoria and have been slowly learning what works best for my face since. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so anything with chemicals, citrus, perfumes and dyes causes a reaction, but somehow it took me almost 25 years to really realize this.

Upon moving to Toronto, I discovered a store called The Detox Market just down the street and it’s the definition of green beauty heaven. With all the natural brands I could ever want or need, it has quickly become my go-to place for everything skin and beauty related. I have had the best time trying out different products and finding my favourites.

After a winter of desperately trying to keep my skin hydrated with endless masks, serums, creams and oils, I made the decision to try and simplify this process for summer. After a whole lot of trial and error, I have created the following routine for summertime skincare and beauty that’s streamlined enough to fit into one small makeup bag, so it’s perfect for weekends away at the cottage. Hope you love it like I do!

Step 1: Cleanse & Tone

The Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser was the first all-natural product that I tried and the one that improved my face the most. I’m no expert, but in retrospect, I was using cleansers that were all wrong for my skin, so trying this one and seeing how happy face could actually feel was a pretty big deal.

Note: although it’s not pictured here, I use the cleanser alongside my Clarisonic MIA Fit. It’s the only product I’ve found that exfoliates my skin without irritating it.

After cleansing, I spray my face with Tata Harper’s Hydrating Floral Essence. It’s very soothing (especially after a day of wearing makeup) and creates a nice moisturized base for applying serums and lotions.

Step 2: Apply Oil & Moisturizer

I was recently introduced to Odacite upon recommendation of The Detox Market and have completely fallen in love. We don’t eat the same things every day, so why do we always feed our skin this way? Odacite is all about customization with a Time Release Delivery Creme that you combine with various serums depending upon what your face needs that day. Whether it’s dryness, clogged pores, hyper pigmentation or dull skin, there’s something for everything and I love it. The Marula Neroli is the serum that I use most often of because it keeps my skin perfectly hydrated and firm.

Step 3: Foundation

After skincare, it’s time for beauty (if you’re into that) and I like to keep it as simple as possible during the summer. My skin has always disliked makeup (it freaks out whenever I put it on), so discovering Sappho products was everything. Their New Paradigm is the best foundation I’ve ever worn, so I just keep buying it over and over again.

Step 4: Powder & Contour

I love a dewy skin look, but the shine has to be in the right places, so before getting my highlight on, I like to mattify my face with a powder. The only one I’ve found that doesn’t dry out my skin is the RMS Beauty “Un” Powder. Next, I use the Alima Pure Mineral Contour Powder to define my my face. My skin loves this product and the colour works great with my super fair complexion. Plus, it blends naturally into the hollows of the cheeks.

Step 5: Highlight!

I got the W3LL PEOPLE Neutral Highlight & Contour Duo and am totally obsessed with the highlighter, but the contour is a bit too dark for my skin. I prefer cream highlighter because I find it easier to be precise with application. I use it on top of my cheek bones, under my eyes, along the bridge of the nose, as well as my above my top lip, so the light hits everything just right.

Step 6: Mascara

I go easy on eye makeup during the summer because I’m wearing sunglasses half the time anyways. I do love a good mascara though and I swear that switching to a natural mascara made my eyelashes grow thicker! My two favourites are the Sappho Paradigm Vegan Mascara for length, but it tends to move a bit during the day, so I wear the W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara when I need longevity.

Extra steps if you’re feeling fancy!

Although I generally keep the beauty routine simple in the summer, there are still those nights out and/or special dinners when you want to be a bit fancy. I have a few go-to natural products that I can’t live without for these occasions. The first is the 100% Pure Matte Lipsticks in any and every colour depending on my outfit. Somehow they don’t dry you lips, but also have zero shine. I don’t know how they do it! The second is the 100% Pure Naked II Palette. I love the blush for the evenings and the nude shadow is the ideal base for a smokey eye using the purple shadow all over the lid, as well as along the bottom last line. It’s the simplest glam look ever!

Use this mask weekly for an extra happy face!

I firmly believe that everyone in the world needs the Tata Harper Clarifying Mask! It is the only clarifying mask I’ve found that doesn’t irritate my skin, but leaves it moisturized, totally calm with no redness AND clarified. Talk about magic! I use it once a week and basically recommend it to anyone and everyone.

There you have it! This is the extent of my summer beauty and skincare routine. There is not a lot to it, but who wants to spend sunny days getting ready anyways? I found that through simplifying my routine and using all-natural products, my skin is calm and balanced which makes it feel and look better. Give these a try and let me know what you think!
