We all know that I love skincare. Learning about different products and experimenting with skincare alternatives is something that I always enjoy sharing on A Piece of Elise. Remember when I myth busted the painful and scary effects of Chemical Peels? Well, during my most recent event at Cosmedica, I learned about another cool new treatment that allows you to improve your skin from the inside out.

I mean, I’ve thought about helping my skin internally by eating well and drinking lots of water; it is our body’s largest organ after all. What I hadn’t though about before was the potential for certain ingestible compounds to have similar, if not better, effects on my skin than some of the many topical treatments that I use daily. Our skin is virtually created from the inside out, so it only makes sense to treat it at the source. For this reason, I wanted to try GliSODin SkinNutrients as soon as I learned about them. Luckily their PR team is fabulous and hooked me up everything to try.

During the event at Cosmedica, I had the opportunity to hear GlidSODin’s founder, Corina, explain a bit about how the product works. She highlighted the fact that our cells are essentially breaking down slowly from the moment we are born and that one of the biggest factors speeding up this breakdown is the presence of free radicals in the body produced by oxygen metabolization. This is why Antioxidants are important; they essentially neutralize these free radicals which speed up the aging process of our bodies.

Antioxidants have two sources; we all know that certain dietary substances can provide levels of antioxidants, but it turns out that those are only secondary to the ones produced internally by our bodies. The major Antioxidant we naturally produce is something called Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), which is the biggest player in neutralizing the free radicals in our bodies. GliSODin discovered that this same Antioxidant was actually present in melons in one (and only one) part of the world (I forget where exactly she said, but it’s somewhere in Europe). The science is a bit complicated, but they have essentially removed this Antioxidant from the melons and condensed it into a super-charged ingestible format which they have turned into a supplement. Essentially, you are providing your system with a wonderfully healing amount of Antioxidant to effectively neutralize free radicals in your body.

Does any of that make sense? I hope so! It’s all pretty scientific, so I’m going to stick with simply sharing my personal experience for the remainder of the article. I just wanted to give you a bit of background as to the science behind the brand. They have been through many clinical studies and have several patents, so it truly is scientific, but also entirely natural which I personally find very appealing appealing.

Reducing Water Retention and Improving Lymphatic Draining

The first product I tried was their Advanced Diuretic Formula which comprises of GliSODin, Green Tea, Artichoke, Burdock and Dandelion. It was created to help with fluid retention and lymphatic draining. Although it is technically a “mini cleanse”, I used it slightly differently upon the recommendation of the GliSODin team. Instead of taking the daily dosage until complete, I would simply take the supplements on days when I had a bit too much salt, or perhaps too many cocktails. After taking the supplements I would wake up feeling significantly less bloated than I otherwise would have. I wouldn’t have a groggy feeling I normally get when I’m not taking care of my body. When I don’t eat well my face also tends to get puffy and the supplements really helped with this. Winning! When it comes to hangovers, I actually noticed that the Advanced Cleasing Formula was more effective (more on that below).

A Full-Body Detox

The next product I tried was the Advanced Cleansing Formula which is made up of GliSODin, Alpha-Lipoic Acid (helps remove heavy metals), Broccoli Florets Extract, Milk Thistle, Nutraflora (prebiotic substance) and Grape Seed Extract. For this cleanse, I mixed the two sachets with water and drank it morning and night for fifteen days straight. I ate relatively healthy during the process (up until the last 4ish days when Fashion Week happened). I must admit that the first 5 days of the cleanse were pretty painful (I had the worst headache ever), but then not only did things go back to normal, but they got better than ever!

I’ve never had good digestion (bloating is a constant issue), but for the firs time in my life my body seemed to digest normally. Additionally, my energy levels became more constant and I noticed less cravings for sugar. I am always having headache issues and although they increased temporarily for the first few days, I noticed an overall decrease towards the end of the cleanse. Game changer! To top it off, the cleanse is a perfect hangover cure! Fashion Week was all open bar, so I definitely had a bit too much wine towards the end of the cleanse, but I would just drink the daily dosage before bed and wake up feeling fine. It’s like magic! This is by far the most effective cleanse I have tried.

Skin Brightening Supplements – Calming Skin From the Inside

I am also trying their Skin Brightening Formula which is the skincare supplement that I began this article talking about. It is essentially something you ingest to improve your skin. Built upon the brand’s melon derived Antioxidant formula, the product is made of GliSODin, Lemon Balm, Lycopene, Borage Seed Oil and CoQ10.

I was surprised to learn that Lycopene actually helps protect agains sun damage (you still need sunscreen if you’re at the beach), but the supplement actually helps with every day UV protection. I have also noticed a drastic reduction in redness. By helping your skin internally, inflammation is reduced radically, so every time I wake up I’m surprised to see how calm my skin is. I’ve always had highly sensitive skin, so this has been such a positive change for me. My face is brighter now that my skin is soothed.

I have been taking the supplements for just under a month now, so I need to wait a bit more before I see the full benefits. I have read that it can actually improve skin’s sebum production and thus making it less dry; I am really looking forward to this, as my skin has been struggling with adjusting to the dry Toronto air.

All in all, I love the idea of treating my skin internally. Our skin is an organ after all, so it makes sense to feed it from the inside too! Please let me know if you have the chance to try any GliSODin products, as I’d love to hear about your experience.

GliSODin is also available in Victoria, BC at Cosmedica.
